Located
1.5 miles north of
Molasses Reef,
French Reef is a spectral reef consisting of
many 'swim-throughs', overhanging ledges and
caves. The small 3-4 foot caves harbor a wide
variety of wildlife. Large grouper have been
known to hang out in Hourglass Cave and you will
want to search for Christmas Tree Cave and White
Sand Bottom Cave. Look for stingrays which may
be found hovering the sand bottom between the
spurs on French Reef.
Also located at the reef is an old galleon
anchor whose flukes stick out from under a large
head of brain coral. Keep an eye out for
numerous fire coral ledges, in addition to
Elkhorn corals and large brain corals.
